Southwark Council are still considering whether to take the Honor Oak Rec for use as a cemetery, and we’ve been making our own submissions to them. Meanwhile, we were disappointed to be told in September – despite having raised it with council staff and in the Chamber regularly over the past year – that Lewisham had put its own suggestions on hold since January. Apparently they’re going to be “explored in more detail following the planned merger of the Bereavement and Green Scene Service Groups” in its own structural reorganisation.

The consultation meeting in the Rec on the 24th September was very well attended and very many salient points were raised by members of the public. A number of Lewisham councillors were in attendance, some also speaking, including Alex as well as John Bowen (councillor for the area around Honor Oak Park the other side of the railway line) and Joan Millbank & Paul Bell (councillors for the area covering the Honor Oak Estate bordering the north of the Rec).

The public campaign has been very active, with lots of people involved, demonstrating the strength of feeling toward saving this important local facility. We have helped with leafletting, petitioning and raising the issue in the local press. There are signs that Southwark Council are beginning to understand how previous ‘solutions’ to their burial needs have failed to create a sustainable system for burials and that, this time, they need to plan for a long-term answer. The formal consultation will have finished by the time you read this, but we will work together to make sure they don’t forget that.
