Twenty’s plenty? Or not? 27 August 2009

There’s a consultation document going through people’s doors in north-
west Forest Hill at the moment. The council are proposing a 20mph zone for the whole of the area bounded by Honor Oak Park, Wood Vale, the South Circular, and the railway line. Those roads wouldn’t be included, and neither would Honor Oak Road.

Most of the affected roads (including the one I live on) have speed humps already, some with pretty vicious ones which will keep you well under 20mph. A few others would need to have humps added. I don’t think humps are ideal: more thoughtful calming measures like chicanes and street-redesigns make the streets both slower and more pleasant. I do support safer speeds on residential streets and many local residents have raised speeding traffic as a concern. As I mentioned a 20mph zone round here to the council’s head of transport 2 years ago, I’m obviously glad to they’re looking at it, but I do hope they’re going to use common sense and listen to what local people say this time.

Please do return your consultation document – you can find an electronic copy on this link – and please do let us know what you think too.
